Stephanie Sherman, PhD, MFA, is a San Francisco鈥揵ased queer, bilingual interdisciplinary educator, choreographer, poet, and visual artist whose work spans the United States, Mexico, and Ecuador. Her artistic and scholarly practice explores the intersections of dance, performance, social justice, identity, and community in the Am茅ricas through both creative and critical inquiry.

Dr. Sherman is a two-time Fulbright award recipient, having received grants to Mexico and Ecuador, and a two-time San Francisco Arts Commission Individual Artist Grantee. Her choreography, performance, and interdisciplinary projects have been presented internationally. Her SFAC-supported dance work The Weight of Thread has received critical acclaim, including recognition from the San Francisco Chronicle, and has performed to sold-out audiences.

She holds a PhD in Performance Studies from UC Berkeley, an MFA in Dance from New York University, and a BA in Hispanic Studies from Vassar College. Her choreographic work has been created and presented throughout Mexico, Ecuador, and the United States. Following her first Fulbright Award, she served as an artist-in-residence and choreographer in Ecuador for the National Performance Network.

Dr. Sherman has taught Dance, Art, Queer & Trans Studies, Disability Studies, and Ethnic Studies at San Jos茅 State University, UC Berkeley, San Francisco State University, California College of the Arts, Mills College, the University of Texas at El Paso, la Academia de la Danza Mexicana (INBA), and the Universidad de las Am茅ricas Puebla. Fluent in Spanish, she teaches in both English and Spanish and is committed to making higher education more accessible to diverse student communities. She is also faculty at City Ballet San Francisco and Ram贸n Moreno Ballet School.

She is the author of bilingual poetry book Tectonic Tongues / Lenguas Tect贸nicas (Black Lawrence Press, 2024). Across her scholarship, teaching, and artistic practice, Dr. Sherman weaves creativity, rigor, care, and a commitment to social justice and transnational dialogue.
