Animation & Illustration FAQs

• What are the requirements for applicants coming from Junior/Community College?

• What classes are transferable from my Junior/Community College?

  • Lists of courses that are transferrable to the 91传媒厂 ANI Program are available .

• What is the length of study?

  • Students coming straight from high school can choose between our and roadmaps.

    Students transferring from community colleges should reference the roadmaps listed above, cross-check the ANI major requirements with which , to determine how long it would take to get through the program.

    Please note: ANI major classes need to be taken in order, in the semesters in which they are listed in the roadmaps, and they are only offered in those specific semesters.

    If you are considering applying, it is highly recommended that you register for one of our monthly tours to make sure we are a good fit for you.

• How should I apply to the 91传媒厂 Animation & Illustration program?

  • Be sure to indicate BFA Animation & Illustration as your major of first choice. Please note that you can only be admitted into the BFA ANI program upon admittance into the school. You cannot switch into the BFA ANI program or enroll in any of the courses otherwise. More information on how to apply can be found .

• Do I need to pass a portfolio review to enter as a Freshman/Transfer student?

  • No. Admission is based solely on GPA, eligibility indexes and supplemental drawing exercises.

• What are the admission criteria for BFA Animation & Illustration?

  • Admissions are based on Eligibility Index for students applying straight out of high school, and GPA for transfer students. Admission criteria changes every year and is posted after students have been admitted.

• If I am not admitted as BFA Animation & Illustration. What are my options?

  • 91传媒厂's College of Humanities and Arts offers degrees in related programs that might be of interest to you, including the BA in Design Studies, Radio/TV/Film/Theatre, and the BFA in Digital Media Arts.

• If admitted to 91传媒厂 as a different major, can I change my major to BFA Animation & Illustration?

  • Unfortunately no, students are not allowed to change their major to Animation & Illustration.

• I am a non-Animation & Illustration major at 91传媒厂. Can I enroll in Animation & Illustration classes?

  • Unfortunately no, non-Animation & Illustration majors are not allowed to enroll in any Animation & Illustration courses.

• I already have a Bachelor鈥檚 degree. Can I still apply to 91传媒厂?

  • Unfortunately 91传媒厂 is currently not accepting students interested in pursuing a second Bachelor鈥檚 degree. However, the 91传媒厂 Animation & Illustration now offers a Master in Design program with a Specialization in Animation. More information can be found here.
    

• What areas of study are offered in the program?

  • The program allows for two areas of concentration: Animation & Illustration, within which students focus in story, visual development, 3-D modeling, or animation.

• When do I choose my concentration?

  • Students following the four-year roadmap need to choose their concentration in their third semester. Students following the five-year roadmap choose their concentration in their fifth semester.

• Does that mean that I have to try all areas before making up my mind?

  • All students are required to take courses that use skills in story, visual development, 3-D modeling and animation before they need to decide on a focus.

• Can I opt to only focus on one type of class; animation, visual development, storyboarding, or modeling?

  • No, all of our students are required to take the same beginning classes in drawing, painting, animation, and modeling. They can begin to decide on a concentration when they approach their junior year.

• Can I have a concentration in just 2-D animation and not 3-D?

  • No, all ANI students learn skills in both 2-D and 3-D animation.

• What is the Program Portfolio Review?

  • Students are required to pass a portfolio review to remain in the program and register for ANI Classes numbered 131 and higher. 

• When do I apply for the Review?

  • Students must apply for the Mid-Program Review in their third semester in the fall. If they do not pass, they are allowed one more portfolio submission attempt in the following spring semester. If they do not apply for or pass the second attempt during the spring semester, they will have their degree status changed from the BFA to the .

• What kind of work should I submit for the Review?

  • Selected work from all of your previous ANI courses and an assigned sketchbook. Complete details on how to apply for the Portfolio Review will be discussed in your classes.

• What happens if I do not pass the portfolio review?

  • A high percentage of students pass the review, but those who do not will schedule a meeting with an ANI advisor, will have their degree status changed from the BFA to the or discuss what alternative course of study best suits their skills.

• Are Animation & Illustration students required to maintain a 3.0 GPA to stay in the major?

  • Yes, as listed in the University catalog, "Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale in all major preparation and major required courses. Students who drop below a 3.0 for two consecutive semesters will have their degree status changed from the BFA to the Design Studies, BA." This is a GPA calculation for all courses listed under "ANI Major Preparation Courses" in the University catalog.

    Animation & Illustration students can find this GPA towards the bottom of their MyProgress page, listed in the "ANIBFA Major GPA (RG4171)" section.
